His career began with an eleven-year tenure at the Alberta Geological Survey, after which he transitioned to consulting for various industry clients and the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). His primary focus has been oil sands related projects, but he also has experience with mineral exploration including lithium, rare earth Elements (REEs), frac sand and salt.

Additionally, he has spent eight years supervising drilling operations, as a wellsite geologist throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Darrell has led and contributed to regional and reservoir-scale studies of hydrocarbon and subsurface waste disposal within all three of Alberta’s oil sand regions, with a significant focus on the Athabasca Oil Sands deposit. His work includes regional subsurface mapping, reservoir characterization, well planning and supervision of both vertical and horizontal wells.

Educationally, Darrell has a technical diploma in Petroleum Technology (1981) from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and a BSc. with Distinction in Geology (1989) from the University of Alberta. He has also served as an Associate Editor for the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geology (CSPG) and is a member of the Association of Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGA), the Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
